Australia’s most accessible and convenient container deposit scheme is now open with refund points open across Victoria as of November 1st 2023.
Member for Bellarine Alison Marchant today announced reverse vending machines for Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme, CDS Vic, are now open at Kingston Village in Ocean Grove and Gateway Plaza in Leopold by TOMRA Cleanaway.
CDS Vic reward Victorians with a 10-cent refund for every eligible used drink can, bottle and carton. There will be more than 600 refund points across the state and four different ways to return eligible containers – reverse vending machines, depots, over-the-counter sites, and bag drops and collections.
CDS Vic will reduce Victoria’s litter by up to half, create new economic opportunities, generate around 640 jobs across the state, in both regional and metropolitan Victoria, and turn drink containers into new recycled products.
The scheme is part of the Victorian Government’s $515 million investment to transform the state’s waste and recycling sector. This includes the new standardised four-stream waste and recycling system, which will meet the target of diverting 80 per cent of all material away from landfill by 2030.
CDS Vic also offers Victorian charities, community groups, environmental groups, sporting clubs and educational organisations new ways to raise funds through collection drives, by operating refund points, or receiving direct donations from the community.
Organisations can benefit by signing up to become a refund operator for CDS Vic as it will generate additional funds for the organisation by receiving bottles, cans and cartons from the community.
If organisations are interested in becoming a CDS Vic refund point operator, contact the local CDS Vic Zone Operator, TOMRA Cleanaway via enquiries@tomracleanaway.com.au and indicate the enquiry is about CDS Vic refund point partnership opportunities.
Charities and not-for-profit organisations may also register to receive donations as part of CDS Vic. When Victorians deposit their bottle or can, they can choose to receive their 10-cent refund, or donate it to a registered CDS donation partner. Charities and not-for-profit organisations can now register via https://cdsvic.org.au/donation-partner-registration.
